Homelessness
affects everyone within a community, but is particularly devastating
to those who experience the loss of a home. Homelessness disrupts every
aspect of family life, damaging the physical and emotional health of
the family, interfering with children’s education and development,
and frequently results in the separation of family members. Some of
the major causes for family homelessness are a lack of affordable housing,
limited employment opportunities, domestic violence and addiction disorders.
The following information may offer insight on the plight of the homeless
as well as the impact homelessness has on the overall community.

Roshelle's Story
Roshelle entered foster care at 14 months when her mother couldn't
care for her. Moved from home to home, she longed for a family
of her own. Increasingly struggling with self worth, she landed in
a group home for troubled teens. Faced with violence and addiction,
she realized she needed a purpose.
Roshelle was 17 when her first daughter was born. Overjoyed with her
own family, she was determined to give her child everything she never
had; vowing to protect her and never allow her into foster care.
Roshelle's strong faith and desire for a stable home drove her success.
She graduated from WIN’s program and received her Associate's Degree
in Business Administration, the first steps toward owning her own business.
Formerly in WIN’s permanent supportive housing program, Roshelle believes
WIN helped her get her life in order by providing shelter, childcare
and counseling: “Whatever you have to offer, I’m taking it. I don't
have pride, I don’t have shame. Maybe I’m going to crawl now, but then
I’m going to walk … and I will come back."
WIN's programs
in education and development improve the lives of families as well
as the overall community.
