ABOUT
WOMEN IN NEED
Women
In Need, Inc. (WIN), founded in 1983, today serves over 8,500 people
including 5,000 children who are homeless and disadvantaged. We
strive to restore dignity, promote independence and provide stable
housing to vulnerable families who face major obstacles that threaten
to destroy their lives. When families find themselves without options,
we provide them with housing, skills, knowledge, understanding and
support.
Transitional
Shelters
2,500
people including 1,500 children sleep in the seven WIN
shelters each night. There, WIN provides the structures
and support systems necessary for families to build better lives.
The typical length of stay in a WIN shelter is six months. Housing
specialists work to find permanent housing for all WIN families.
95% of the women who complete the WIN shelter program and find permanent
housing, are still in that housing two years later.
Training
and Counseling
WIN teaches the life skills women need to care for their families
and flourish independently. Our programs include domestic
violence services and referrals; HIV/AIDS
prevention education; and employment
training and job placement assistance.
Treatment
WIN offers alcohol
and substance abuse treatment in two intensive
licensed clinics. The unique, outpatient programs are holistically
designed to meet the needs of women.
Children's
Services
WIN offers childcare
to all clients, not only those living in our shelters. Programs
include after school and homework help; therapeutic daycare; parenting
workshops; and Camp WIN which serves almost 500 children each summer.
Permanent
and Supportive Housing
WIN has 164 permanent
supportive apartment units for special populations
of mothers with children. These special populations include mothers
with histories of domestic violence, foster
care, and those who are in recovery from substance abuse.
An additional 22 are pending approval.
Aftercare
and Alumni
WIN continues to care for mothers who have graduated from our shelter
programs and gone on to achieve stable employment and housing for
their families. WIN provides on-going support through counseling,
education and workshops. Our aftercare
and alumni programs are a continuous resource
for problem solving and quality-of-life issues.
Eviction
Prevention
WIN no longer provides the social services for the Housing
Help program created by United Way of NYC.
